Who do you think should/ will win the Oscar best animated picture this year? Personally I think Frozen is gonna be hard to beat.
(This is going to be long so brace yerself) I think Frozen probably will end up winning it, just because of how stunningly beautiful it was and the brilliant songs. However, I would rather another film won it personally, probably The Wind Rises. Disney/Pixar ALWAYS hog the oscars, and Frozen honestly was not better than some of the films on there. In my own world I would rather it was Despicable Me 2 because for me that film was near perfection but I know that won’t happen.
I haven’t seen The Wind Rises (it hasn’t come out in the UK yet and I’m going to watch it in theatres before I watch online or anything), but it is Hayao Miyazaki’s last feature film and I already know it will something beautiful. I love Disney with all my heart, it will always be special to me above any other animation studio, but for me, Studio Ghibli focus on a part of life that big Western Studios don’t. With western feature films it’s always about the action and the movement of the story, there’s always something happening (or someone singing). But in Ghibli films, there are so many human moments, pauses and moments of life (without plot-moving), and moments of human frailty and mistake. Prime example being in Spirited Away (using SA as an example because it is the one I am SURE almost all of my followers will have seen), when Chihiro has to fasten a rope around the bar sticking out of the huge muddy river spirit. She tries to loop it around a few times but can’t manage it, so Lin goes to help her. You don’t get moments like that in Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks films in quite the same way. Anyway I have gone off on a tangent here.
*spoilers…* Frozen is so brilliant and beautiful and amazing, but I am pretty certain that they focused on the wrong character. I LOVE Anna, her quirkiness and the way she is completely and unapologetically herself, and (for me) her songs were the best (sorry Let It Go fans, I love that song but I prefer most of Anna’s more!) But, she didn’t really emotionally grow as a character throughout the entire film. She was already desperate to connect with Elsa again at the start of the film, so her jumping in front of Hans’ sword at the end, even though it is dramatic and emotional, isn’t a huge character developing moment. It is Elsa that has to go through the biggest change. Sure, she gets the biggest song of the movie (and it is fabulous and inspiring and the animation oh my goodness it’s so incredible), but there isn’t enough of her. She is the one that goes through all of the emotional growth and development, but you don’t really get a chance to connect with her, aside from her powerhouse song and coronation. Plus, in the film as a whole, there isn’t enough SHOWING, and too much TELLING, regarding the relationship between Anna and Elsa. I’m not going to explain what that means in detail because it takes too long (and this is already rather lengthy), but it is a classic writing technique (that my writer dad is always pushing) that really helps the viewer connect better with the characters. Because after all, actions speak louder than words. And there were too many words in Frozen. Not enough action.
(I was going to finish there but I thought of one more thing sorry about the essay I just love talking about animation it’s my faave) On the subject of words, the script. The script. Was dull. I think the phrase ‘Wait, what?’ was used so many times the comic effect was entirely lost on me, and it was almost embarrassing; it seemed like lazy writing. The songs were great, up to Disney’s brilliant standard, with some refreshing new composers (though I’ll always love you Alan). But the script? Compare it with Wreck-It-Ralph, which for me, was top-notch family film script material. It was witty, hilarious, had moments that only us older children would understand, but also was genuinely heartfelt and emotional. And there was a lot of showing not telling in that film.
Anyway. To clarify, I adore Frozen (I want this to be clear, I love it), and it will probably win, but I want something else to win. Thank you for the question (and sorry for the huge long essay reply) ~~
And to anyone that may disagree, just remember this is my opinion! It is not fact!
